Increasing Fruit and Veggies in Diet Lowers Risk of Death by 39

(Article first published as Add More Veggies and Fruit to Your Diet, Lower Death Risk by 39 Percent on Technorati.)
It will come as no surprise to many health minded individuals that a natural diet high in vegetables and fruits promotes health and extends lifespan. Foods saturated with synthetic chemicals, hydrogenated fats, salt and sugar stress our genetic integrity and result in metabolic chaos.

We evolved to eat a diet packed with nutrients in a natural state and live in an environment free of pollutants and man-made toxins. Researcher shows a diet high in vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of death from all causes by up to 39%.

Alpha-Carotene Level Linked with Lower Risk of Death
Alpha-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that we take in largely from eating a diet high in vegetables and fruits. This nutrient superstar is found concentrated in the brightly colored skins and flesh of most foods in their natural form. Information published in the Archives of Internal Medicine provides the results of a study performed on a group of more than 15,000 men and women over a period of nearly 18 years. A review of circulating alpha-carotene in the blood showed a direct correlation between blood saturation of the nutrient and risk of dying.

Healthy Diet Shown to Reduce All Cause Mortality by 39%
Researchers measured alpha-carotene levels to determine risk of death and found that those individuals with the highest blood saturation had a 39% lower risk of dying from any cause compared with the lowest levels. Participants that consumed the most vegetables and fruits were found to have the highest alpha-carotene levels, while a processed food diet yielded virtually no measurable levels of the antioxidant. The study found that alpha-carotene provided a high degree of protection against cardiovascular disease and cancers of the brain, liver and skin.

Foods That Increase Alpha-Carotene Levels
Alpha-carotene reduces risk of disease because it is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes the damaging effects of free radicals on our cells and energy producing mitochondria. It`s best to consume organic vegetables and fruits as your primary source of alpha-carotene. You can find rich sources in yellow-orange vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and winter squash. Dark green leafy vegetables including broccoli, green beans and peas, spinach and leaf lettuce are also excellent sources.

Fruit Shown to Cut Lung Cancer Risk by 23%
The results of a study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention reveals that eating a wide variety of different types of fruits can lower the risk of lung cancer by as much as 23%. Interestingly, the study demonstrated that the risk was reduced more by the number of different fruits consumed and was not dependent on quantities eaten. Eating from more than eight sub-groups was shown to provide the most protection. Risk declined by 4% for each additional variety added to the diet.

Research continues to validate the critical importance that proper diet plays in preventing lifestyle illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Our cells have evolved through generations to rely on carotenoids such as alpha-carotene for protection from free radical damage. As health minded individuals, we are charged with the responsibility to eat from a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and foods in their natural form to prevent disease and increase life span.

Star Fruit

The star fruit or carambola is a tropical fruit that is gaining popularity in the United States. This fruit acquired its name from the five pointed star shape when cut across the middle of the fruit. It has a waxy, golden yellow to green color skin with a complicated flavor combination that includes plums, pineapples, and lemons.

Originally from Sri Lanka and the Moluccas, and cultivated in Southeast Asia and Malaysia for several hundred years, this fruit also goes by many other names including: bilimbi, belimbing, Chinese star fruit, five-angled fruit and the star apple. Today, star fruit flourishes in south Florida and Hawaii because the fruit thrives on growing in a warm environment. Two types of star fruit are grown, tart and sweet. Tart varieties typically have narrowly spaced ribs, while sweet varieties tend to have thick, fleshy ribs. The tastes between the two are hardly distinguishable, as the tart variety still has some sweetness. This tropical fruit is readily available July through February.

Star fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C, is low fat, and naturally sodium and cholesterol free. A small whole star fruit will provide approximately 2/3 cup sliced.

Selection
Select firm, shiny skinned, even colored fruit. Star fruits will ripen at room temperature and have lightly brown edges on the ribs when it’s ripe. Avoid purchasing star fruit with brown, shriveled ribs. This delicious fruit is also available dried.

Storage
Non-ripe star fruit should be turned often, until they are yellow in color and ripe with light brown ribs. Store ripe star fruits at room temperature for two to three days or unwashed, and refrigerated, in a plastic bag for up to one week.

Preparation
Star fruits are great to eat out of hand as these tropical delights do not need to be peeled or seeded before eating. Simply wash the fruit, remove any blemished areas, cut crosswise to get the star shape, and eat!

Fruit juice More Effectively Prevent Heart Disease

Health for human |  Apparently eating fruits are very beneficial for health, including preventing heart and blood vessel disease. you need to know the latest research indicates, consume in the form of juice or fruit juice, it gives greater efficacy than eating it in the form intact.

Dr. Decorde Kelly of the University of Montpellier France and his team report on a study to prove that peratmakalinya processing the fruit into juice or fruit juice has important implications for health. So far, said Decorde, people eat fruit in the form of processed products like juice, but information on the nutritional composition limited to the shape intact.

To analyze the extent to which the process of "Juicing" This affects the content of powerful antioxidants called phenols in fruit, Decorde and his team carried out tests using hamster.

The animals were divided into groups and let them have a diet with high levels of fat and cholesterol to trigger the onset of atherosclerosis or the formation of fatty plaques in arteries that can cause heart attacks and strokes. Groups of hamsters fed no apple, purple grape, apple juice, grape juice and water.

Of animals A control group to undergo a normal diet. The amount of fruit the hamsters consumed balanced view of human normal consumption averages about three apples and three series of wine per day. Hamsters given juice drank the equivalent of four glasses per day for a person weighing 70 kilograms (154 pounds).

Apples and grapes according to the study the researchers have same phenol content, while the purple grape juice had 2.5 times more phenols than apple juice.

At the end of the study revealed, compared with animals given water, fed hamsters the fruit and juice had lower cholesterol levels, less oxidative stress, and less fat accumulation in the vessels of the aorta, the main channel of supplying oxygenated blood throughout the body. Purple grape juice was recorded to give the greatest influence followed by purple grapes, apple juice and fruit.

"These findings indicate that the amount of phenols contained in the diet has a direct effect on its antioxidant properties," wrote the researchers who load their research in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research April 2008 issue.

Other antioxidant compounds in fruits such as vitamin C and carotenoids, could also contribute to their effects. The results of this study said, Decorde, give advice and encouragement that fruit and fruit juices may have significant relevance and could diapliasikan for public health.

Slice and Eat a Star Fruit

CHOOSING THE RIGHT STARFRUIT

Seeing a star fruit (or starfruit) in the grocery store can be a little intimidating or seem ‘too exotic’ if you’ve never sliced and eaten one your self, but don’t be scared, it’s delicious and easy. The best looking star fruit may not be the most ripe and delicious, so choosing the right one is important. Your best bet is to find the fruit with the least amount of green on the edges and the richest orange color. This could mean there are some brown edges, but if they are small, that indicates it’s at its optimum ripeness.

I have tried buying green star fruit and letting them ripen to a bright orange color, but they are always much more bitter than finding the fruit at the stand that has spent more time ripening on the tree. It really is hit or miss, so if you find a good source for them, stick with it. In Costa Rica there is a farmers market in the Pavas area of San José that has a lot of stands with star fruit, which they call carambola, but we have our favorite of course. You can find the market extending down about 500 meters along the street running beside the Palí in Pavas every Saturday morning.

A great way to use star fruit that I’ve noticed here in Costa Rica is to juice them and combine with sugar and cinnamon for a sweet little cocktail. If you then take the juice and blend it with ice, it’s even better for the summer.

HOW TO SLICE A STARFRUIT

1. First choose the best, most ripe starfruit with slight green edges and rich orange color

2. Using a sharp butcher knife, slide the blade down the green edges of the star fruit being careful only to remove the non-orange edge.

3. Once the edges are removed, slice off the two ends. Only remove about 1/2 inch, not too much. At this point your fruit should have no more green or brown areas.

4. Next, slice the trimmed starfruit across the broad side, into star shapes about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick

5. You’ll notice that your slices have seeds in them, mostly in the middle pieces. These should be removed with the tip of the knife.

6. Star fruit is a very fun-shaped fruit, so get creative with how you plate it. It also makes a great garnish, and in Costa Rica (in Spanish is called ‘carambola’) they are plentiful and cheap. They are a great snack with a little sprinkle of cinnamon, as a juice drink, or to use in salads. They are versatile, so find your favorite way to use them and enjoy!

ADDING STARFRUIT TO YOUR DIET

You can add star fruit to your diet in a variety of ways. My favorite is in a fruit salad, but it is also a great compliment to a green garden salad or a chicken dish that uses coconut. Anything dish that combines sweet and savory is a great one to garnish with starfruit or use within the recipe.

Prevent Stroke with Citrus Fruit

Prevent Stroke with Citrus Fruit - Recent research shows that eating citrus fruit regularly can help reduce the risk of stroke. For this study, researchers focused on compounds called flavanone, which is found in citrus fruits.

"These data provide strong support for eating more fruit juice as a daily consumption to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke," says study leader Aedin Cassidy, head of the nutrition of Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, England.

There is a possibility that flavanone in citrus fruits improve blood vessel function or reduce inflammation, which has been associated with stroke, the researchers said.

Cassidy said, to gain maximum benefit from the flavanone, fruits should be presented in the form of juice and no added sugar.

The study was published online on February 23, 2012 in the journal Stroke, whose research is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Flavanones is a type of flavonoid which has been known for its ability to suppress the incidence of stroke risk is lower. In addition to fruits and vegetables, flavonoids are also found in red wine and dark chocolate.

For this study, the researchers focused on the six subclasses of flavonoids, including flavanone.

In the study researchers evaluated data from the U.S. Nurses Health Study for 14 years. The study involved nearly 70,000 women, who each reported their food intake every four years and include details about the consumption of fruits and vegetables. At the end of the study note that there are about 1803 cases of stroke occurring. Approximately half had ischemic stroke (blockage of blood vessels).

Researchers said the number of flavonoid intake did not reduce the risk of stroke, but flavanone intake may reduce the risk of stroke. Women who earn more flavanone intake have an increased risk 19 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke than those who eat them in small amounts.

The researchers found that 95 percent of consumption flavanone derived from citrus fruits and juices, especially orange and grapefruit juice. Participants who ate the fruit or orange juice at most, the risk of stroke was reduced by 10 percent.

Women who received the lowest intake of flavanone on average consume about 150 milligrams of flavonoids per day or less. While those who earn large amounts of flavanone intake consumed about 470 milligrams a day.

Is Eating Star Fruit Dangerous

Star fruit (also known as carambola) is a tropical fruit that traditionally comes from a tree (Averrhoa carambola) native to Sri Lanka and the Moluccas (also known as the Spice Islands), an archipelago in Indonesia. It is now grown in Florida and Hawaii, as well as in Southeast Asia and Malaysia. The name star fruit comes from the fact that when sliced, the cross section has the shape of a five-pointed star.

Star fruit can be yellow to green with a complex flavor that may be tart or sweet, combining flavors of pineapples and lemons.

If you have no kidney problems, you can eat all the star fruit you want - it has no effect on healthy kidneys. But if your kidney function is impaired, eating star fruit can be very dangerous, even deadly. Symptoms of "star fruit intoxication" include persistent hiccups, nausea, vomiting, agitation, insomnia, mental confusion and convulsions that occur within one to five hours of eating the fruit.

The problem seems to be the high levels of oxalic acid (or oxalate) in this fruit that can accumulate in weakened kidneys. But since kidney patients dont seem to have problems eating other oxalate-rich foods (such as spinach), Brazilian researchers who have been studying the reaction suggest that another, unidentified substance toxic to nerves is the real culprit. Whatever this toxin may be, people with healthy kidneys have no problem excreting it while those with impaired kidney function run into trouble with the combination of the unknown toxin and oxalate. The only way to deal with star fruit intoxication is prompt dialysis – so anyone who does have kidney problems and develops hiccups, vomiting or other symptoms after eating star fruit should get immediate medical attention.

Star fruit intoxication can develop in patients with kidney failure after eating as little as one half of a fruit or drinking less than eight ounces of star fruit juice. In one case, a patient with impaired kidney function died after eating just a single star fruit.
