In addition, some soft drinks and mineral water may contain high levels of sodium; also consider that when a 60 pounds child drinks a 12 ounce cola containing 50 mg of caffeine, he’s getting the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee in a 175 pound man. A child who is restless or sleepless may be experiencing the effects of too much soda pop. In adults, excessive caffeine may raise blood pressure and cause irregular heartbeats. People who react to caffeine should choose one of the decaffeinated soft drinks that are available.
When patients can’t take other foods and liquids, soft drinks can provide energy during illness, some people find that sipping flat ginger ale or cola quells the nausea associated with MIGRAINE and morning sickness. Marketers claim that so called sports drinks rapidly replenish the water and electrolytes lost by athletes. In fact, experts recommend that athletes should rehydrate with plain water or diluted fruit juice; only in grueling endurance training during extremely hot weather is an athlete likely to lose a significant volume of electrolytes. Don’t be misled by the names of fruit flavored drinks, on close reading, labels will disclose that non carbonated fruit drinks often contain less than 10% fruit juice while harboring large amounts of sweeteners and dyes.
Soft drinks and soda pop need not be harmful if consumed in moderation. The danger is that if taken regularly in large amounts of soft drinks, they may satisfy hunger and take the place of essential nutrients in the diet. Children who fill up on sugary drinks shortly before and during meals may spoil their appetites for healthful foods.

You can make refreshing and economical drinks at home by mixing sodium free seltzer or fruits flavored sparkling water with fruit juice, a mixture of chopped fresh fruit or any of the wide variety of fruit nectars and syrups now sold in food stores and supermarkets. You can satisfy your thirst with plain tap water or you can choose bottled mineral water a carbonated cola or citrus drink, orangeade, or sparkling fruits punch.
