Keep Track of Food to Double Weight Loss Efforts

(Article first published as Food Diary Shown to Double Successful Weight Loss Efforts on Technorati.)
If you were to ask anyone who is trying to lose weight how many calories they eat each day or how long they spend exercising, chances are overwhelming that the answer would be grossly underestimated. People are very poor judges of calorie count or portion size when working toward a weight loss goal.

Most will indicate they eat very little when in reality they are taking in 20 to 40% more calories than anticipated, more than enough to sabotage their efforts. Another common mistake is the belief that since they are exercising regularly, they can consume more to compensate. The only way you can accurately gauge caloric intake and energy expenditure is to keep a daily log or journal to prevent excess calories and ensure successful weight loss.

Keeping a Food Journal Can Double Weight Loss
The results of a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine demonstrates that despite our best intentions, most people grossly underestimate portion sizes and calories eaten when they don’t measure their food. The researchers found that the more detailed food records that were kept by study participants, the more weight they lost. Those with the most meticulous recordkeeping lost twice as much as those who kept no track at all. And they were able to keep the weight off as long as they continued to record in their journal.

Keeping an Accurate Food Log: Be Honest With Yourself
It isn’t that people are trying to be dishonest with food tracking, as they are only hurting themselves. The problem is we like to snack between meals or grab a few jelly beans, a small piece of chocolate or a sugary power drink with the thought it won’t make a difference. Those calories add up and at the end of the day you could be adding several hundred calories to you total. Keeping a handy journal where you record every bite of food before it goes in your mouth can help you stay on track. Here’s why:

Provides a True Understanding of Portions and Calories: When you’re forced to account for every calorie you eat, you quickly gain an understanding of portion sizes and the type of foods that pack on the calories (processed snacks, baked treats and fried foods), compared to fresh vegetables that you can eat in almost unlimited quantities.

Record Your Food Before You Eat: The most important part of the program is to always record the food or drink and portion size before you consume it. This will give your mind the time to understand the caloric impact of your food choice and possibly you’ll decide that you don’t need to eat now and can wait until your next meal.

Remove the Emotional Element of Eating: We all eat for different reasons. Some people are emotional eaters, while others use food as a social event to entertain or maintain a family unit. These occasions are a guarantee that you’ll overeat if you don’t record your food ahead of time. Plan your meal before the event or meal begins and stick to your plan.

Failure to properly plan and record your menu can derail your best weight loss intentions. We frequently underestimate portion size and the total calorie count of a given food item or meal. Measuring or weighing all foods is critical to achieving your weight loss target. You can double the results of your efforts and keep the weight off permanently by keeping a daily food journal.

How Can You Keep Your Skin Healthy

how to maintain healthy skin

How to maintain healthy skin

Time is the enemy of us all, and no one is going to be able to escape the effects of time if theyre lucky enough to live a long and fruitful life. This means that your skin is eventually going to sag and wrinkle. The good news, though, is that you can prolong this process by simply taking great care of your skin. Read the article below to find out some great tips you can use to prolong the inevitable.

On the surface, you might think that oil will actually damage your skin by clogging up your pores and causing dirt to become trapped inside. Well, using oil lightly is really a great way to prolong the aging process. If you apply just a bit of oil under your eyes and on your cheeks every night, you can help to prevent wrinkles and the other signs of aging. Just make sure that youre using an organic oil that was designed for facial use. Dont break into the bottle of canola oil for this.

Collagen is a natural substance found in the body. Its part of what keeps your skin tight and youthful looking. So when youre shopping around for a product to use on your face, make sure it has some collagen in it. That being said, its always important that you focus on the other ingredients. Collagen is important, but you shouldnt purchase anything if its not also an organic product all around.

Some of the best advice you can ever use when it comes to prolonging the appearance of aging is to actually stay in good general health. Instead of throwing a bunch of products on your face, you can really keep great-looking skin by making sure to take different antioxidants and vitamins. Try pomegranate juice, blueberries and leafy greens for antioxidants. And for vitamins, make sure youre getting enough of vitamins A, C and E in your system.

The words acid and face shouldnt be put together in the same sentence a lot, unless youre talking about hyaluronic acid. This isnt a harsh acid; its similar to the acid you would find in some citrus fruits or vinegar, only not as strong. Using products containing small levels of this acid is a great way to get rid of dirt and grit and dead skin cells. It will also react with your skin and help to keep it looking tight and exuberant.

Did you know that you can get a sunburn in the wintertime? You can even get harmful sun when its cloudy out! UV rays arent very good for you at all. They will cause your skin to become weak and damaged and can even cause more serious issues with prolonged exposure. So if youre going outside, make a habit out of applying a layer of sunscreen to the exposed areas of your skin. Its a preemptive measure that works well.

Following the tips from this article will help you to stay young looking and vibrant for years to come. Age is eventually going to catch up with you, but you have the power to put it off for a while.

An Herb A Day To Keep The Dentist Away

Okay. Corny title of this article aside, I really, really hate going to the dentist. Seriously. I’ll balance on my hands, get a tenth tattoo, schedule five vaccinations in one day, and run a marathon barefoot. No problem.

But I have an overwhelming fear of the dentist.
Why do I hate the dentist? I have receding gums (genetics, not bad habits, really), so getting my teeth cleaned is extremely, awfully, fantastically painful. But not getting my teeth cleaned? The recession happens faster and faster until I drastically lose all of my teeth. Or something. I’m not quite clear on the consequences. I call it deliberate ignorance.

Anyway, finally, I made an appointment and, of course, there was work to be done. To clean down by the gum line, where the roots are exposed for those of us with this kind of recession, the entire jaw needs to be numbed.

I’ll spare you the details, but my jaw hurt for two long weeks. We’re talking deep, aching pain.
What’s an herbalist to do? I began experimenting with herbs, and the results were pretty amazing.
First, oil pulling. I choose coconut oil. I swear by it for treating sensitive teeth and gums; it’s made an amazing difference.

Second, tooth powder. Toothpaste has glycerin in it, which is a natural product (that is, only if you’re buying natural toothpastes from reputable health food stores), but it can coat your teeth. This can be good or bad. Sometimes it helps dull sensitivity, but it can also keep teeth from getting truly clean.
My solution is to brush with an all-natural toothpaste geared toward sensitive teeth, but to then use a tooth powder twice a week for maintenance.

Here’s my recipe, broken down by the benefits of each ingredient.

Four parts clay (white or bentonite). I opt for bentonite, if you can find it. It helps to re-mineralize the teeth, draw toxins from the gums and mouth, and helps protect against (and even heal from) heavy metal toxicity.

One part baking soda. Baking soda is a stain remover, whitener, gentle abrasive, and contains tons of minerals.

One-half part white oak bark powder. For those of us with receding gums, loose teeth, or painful jaws, white oak bark provides huge relief and healing. Oak bark contains tannins which tighten loose teeth and gums, and over time can help the retain the elasticity of the tissue. White oak also contains high levels of minerals — calcium, manganese and zinc — which will strengthen the teeth and jaw over time.

One-half part myrrh gum powder. Myrrh preserves tissue, slowing its deterioration. So, if you have recession or infection problems, this ingredient is a must.

One-half part clove powder. Cloves are powerful pain relievers. In fact, if you have a painful tooth, you can place a few drops of clove oil on the affected area and the pain should quickly vanish. I like clove in this recipe because of its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal.

Optional:
Essential Oils: Peppermint and/or cinnamon. To flavor your powder and to freshen your breath, you may choose to throw in a few drops of these popular toothpaste additives. You can also substitute ½ part of either peppermint (or spearmint) or cinnamon powder (or both) instead of the essential oil.
Sweeteners: I like to add a few shakes of stevia powder to my tooth concoction, but xylitol is also a really good choice. It’s often found in tooth preparations and prized not only for its natural sweetness, but also for its ability to keep the ph of your mouth neutral. Its antibacterial and may be able to strengthen and preserve tooth enamel. You can get xylitol powder at most natural food stores. Just add it to suit your taste.
Combine: Combine all the ingredients in a clean jar. Shake or whisk it up. I like to wet my toothbrush, then dip it into the jar itself. For this reason, if you’re making a batch for your household, you might want to give everyone their own jar. This also allows each individual to flavor/sweeten to his or her taste. Ive also found this to be a fun project for kids who may be reticent or less-than-enthusiastic about brushing.
All of these ingredients are safe, by the way. It is toothpaste, after all — youre just spitting it out after brushing. Any small amounts swallowed during the brushing process (even by children) are safe.
A note: If youve recently had dental work and you are in pain, one thing Ive found to be enormously helpful, is to put one or two drops (only) of goldenseal tincture on the affected tooth or gum. Not only does this seem to relieve pain almost instantly, goldenseal is a strong antibiotic and will protect the sensitive area from bacteria. Discontinue use when the area has healed.
Happy brushing!
